Featured Artist: The artist is Anita Polacca, a Hopi elder who lives in First Mesa on the Hopi reservation in northern Arizona. These pots are fired in the traditional way, using a sheep dung fire. You can tell that pots have been fired in the traditional way when there are brown spots where the dung touches the pot. Because the ground is frozen in winter, the pots are made only during the warmer months. Red clay and sand from First Mesa, her home, are used to create the pots. Mustard plants are used to make paint. Commercial products are not used in any part of the firing process.
